Our scripture reading this week ( Kings 19: 11-15) includes the story of Elijah's experience in the presence of God.

Marc Chagall, who illustrated this scene in the image above, wrote: "Ever since my early childhood, I have been captivated by the Bible. It has always seemed to me, and still seems to me today, to be the greatest source of poetry of all time. Ever since then, I have searched for its reflection in life and art: the Bible is like an echo of nature, and this is the secret I have tried to convey."

On Sunday at 10AM, we will be sharing Communion,

On Sunday at 10AM, we will be sharing Communion, the service of Christian worship at which bread and wine are consecrated and shared. That's the first definition found in a dictionary.

But there's a second:

"Communion- The sharing or exchanging of intimate thoughts and feelings, especially when the exchange is on a mental or spiritual level".

As you come to this weeks' service to take the Sacrament, you will also be immersed in a community of curiosity, understanding and spirituality. We look forward to having you there!

What is the Bible?

One of Pastor Matt's favorite Bible translations is The Jesus Storybook Bible and it explains the Bible this way:

"The Bible isn’t a book of rules, or a book of heroes. The Bible is most of all a Story. It’s an adventure story about a young Hero who comes from a far country to win back his lost treasure. It’s a love story about a brave Prince who leaves his palace, his throne – everything – to rescue the one he loves. It’s like the most wonderful fairy tale that has come true in real life!”

WHERE ARE THEY NOW? RCB has been filled with incr

WHERE ARE THEY NOW?

RCB has been filled with incredible staff and this series of posts brings you an update on some of them.

In each post, we ask the same four questions: 1. What did you learn at RCB? 2. What did you contribute? 3. What do you miss? 4. What is your prayer for our church now?

Here is the Reverend Cari Pattison (Associate Pastor at RCB from 2007-2019), currently serving as pastor at the Woodstock Reformed Church in Woodstock, NY.

1. I learned a lot about different leadership models for senior ministers (I got to work closely with four of them). I learned that rituals, ceremonies, and sacraments mean more than you think. I also got to try out creative ministry ideas. RCB was a great learning lab for me as a preacher, too.

2. I gave this congregation the experience of having a woman minister in preaching, teaching, and pastoral care. I also feel proud of re-creating the confirmation program at the time, and helping mark some of people’s significant life passages with baptisms, weddings, and funerals.

3. I miss the curiosity and stimulation of people in this church, and their motivation for trying new things. There are a lot of people who are lifelong learners at RCB, and I miss that depth and breadth of engagement. I also miss having a staff team to bounce ideas off each other and work together.

4. My prayer for RCB is that more attendees will move from “What do I get out of this?” to “How can I help build this?” I pray that RCB becomes even more of a portal for those outside the church who may not be religious but are searching for belonging and meaning. And that RCB might model a community with a counter-narrative to the culture of Southern Westchester. That narrative is typically one centered on looks, money, achievement, and the success of their youth. If you can remind people that they belong to something greater- that their worth is in something higher? Wow. That’s the good news in Christ that a non-believing world longs to hear.

It was a full house this morning as we formed a lo

It was a full house this morning as we formed a loving send off for the hugely loved and magnificent Reverend Sam Clover.

Sam has been with RCB for 11 years, preaching, giving faith and peace in pastoral care, communicating and working as a team player behind the scenes. In his last sermon at the RCB pulpit, he lifted Psalm 138; "I give you thanks, O LORD, with my whole heart." Sam wanted us to know that our fingerprints will always be on his heart and we wish and his wife Jen such joy as he enters a senior minister role at the Greenvale Church in Scarsdale- not too far away...

Thanks also to the SCHOLA choir who showed up to deliver some of Sam's favorite hymns and songs.

After months of communication between RCB and the

After months of communication between RCB and the Ukrainian minister, Zhenya, whose noble work we have been supporting, Pastor Matt was able to speak directly to Zhenya and two of his comrades, all who are risking their lives to transport Ukrainians out of dangerous areas and to bring supplies to those remaining and to pray #westchester

In our Easter offerings, RCB congregants and friends raised over $100,000 for this team to buy 2 state- of- the- art vans and additional supplies to help to fund this effort (to see one of the vans we sponsored and to meet Zhenya, please visit link in bio).

Since our last post, this team has been able to transport 13 tons of humanitarian aid and have gotten over 500 people out of Ukraine (for reference, vans seat 14 people plus a driver and 10 people plus a driver at a time).

The war remains destructive and dangerous. One of the drivers on the call spoke about driving down a street working to extract people out of their basements as mortars flew from both sides.

Matt and friend of the church Jennifer Purdon prayed with this team, reinforcing the love and support we continue to give through Pslam 121:

"My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth. indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. the LORD will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore".

Window repair has begun! In the next few weeks, t

Window repair has begun!

In the next few weeks, the stained glass windows in the front and the back of the church will be removed for refurbishment. Sections are moved from the inside and the out. The company will replace these widows with a plexiglass base and some sort of photo rendition of what is usually there.

Will you be able to tell the difference?

It's National Ice Cream Day!

Ice cream often reminds us of being kids and when we were kids, we were often filled with childlike wonder. It's takes effort to bring this mindset into adulthood; in some ways, it resembles faith.

Here are a few tips on how to bring it to the forefront:

1. Smile when you feel like it.
2. Be kind with words of encouragement.
3. Be curious.
4. Listen and understand.
5. Always hope for the best.
6. Decide to be fearless.
7. Dream gig—regardless of your age.

Bring your stretching and yoga outside. Create a natural altar. Or just pause for a moment of gratitude for the beauty that, when paying attention, is everywhere.

Here's a word that won't show up in Wordle: Epaph

Here's a word that won't show up in Wordle: Epaphras. This was an important part of Pastor Matt's sermon this morning.

Epaphras was a believer in Christ who served with the apostle Paul, who referred to him as a “fellow servant,” “faithful minister,” and “servant of Christ Jesus” (Colossians 1:7; 4:12).

An epaphras is a mentor, someone who helps guide you on choices in your interior life and spiritual journey.

A RCB, Pastor Christian is working to urge each young congregant to think about which adults could be an epaphras for them, so when they graduate, they have a created web of mentorship.

Members of the High School Youth Group returned fr

Members of the High School Youth Group returned from a 5-day trek in Colorado where they paddled through rapids, hiked big elevation, experienced fierce weather, shared thoughtful, prayerful discussions around scripture (including Psalms 8 and 98- give them a read). They also universally agreed that there's nothing quite a first meal when coming off a trail- thank you burger truck! Be on the lookout for a luncheon invite from @christianverwys to hear more about this adventure celebrating the beauty of nature and shared experience.

Recently, RCB hosted a celebratory lunch for volun

Recently, RCB hosted a celebratory lunch for volunteers of the Clothing Closet, a group of men and women who have diligently worked to sort and organize thousands of items to sell on behalf of the church. This year, the two events were enormously successful. Pastor Matt calls this effort one of the most important outreach events we do, not only for the money it generates but for how grateful shoppers are to get beautiful items for affordable prices.

The run-up to the sale and the actual sale usually involves over 100 volunteers and in the past 2 sales, the Varsity Football team has helped carry everything upstairs! This effort takes a village and at the end of the meal, volunteer Delores Silvera-Torella recited this poem of gratitude:

“It is my joy in life to find at every turning of the road
The strong arms of a comrade kind to help me onward with my load.
But since I have no goal to give and love alone must make amends
I only pray that while I live God makes me worthy of my friends."
