On so many fronts, this is a year of change. From the presidential election, to new family situations for many, to the search for our next senior minister, much is in flux. Yet there are eternal truths. One of them is God’s desire for us to live fully, as spoken to us by Jesus: “I have come that they may have life, and have it abundantly” (John 10:10).
The Bible proclaims that a major way for us to live abundantly is to give abundantly:
- “Cast your bread upon the waters, for you will find it after many days,” wrote the author of Ecclesiastes (11:1).
- “A gift opens the way and ushers the giver into the presence of the great,” declared the writer of Proverbs (18:16).
- And Jesus said: “Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and runningover, will be poured into your lap” (Luke 6:38).
Giving blesses not only the recipient, but the giver, too. It puts our faith into action and binds us closer together with our neighbors. Giving changes us, and changes the world.
Our goal for this year's “Abundant Giving, Abundant Living” stewardship campaign is to raise $1.7 million of our $2.6 million total budget. Because of the generosity and trust of previous generations, we enjoy the blessing of a well-managed endowment that covers all buildings and grounds costs, plus some of our general administrative costs--approximately $1 million. This means that every penny you give goes directly to worship, education and outreach.
But while the lights will stay on, our vibrant programs can’t grow or be sustained without your gift. It's amazing what happens at our church every week: choir rehearsals (13 hours per week for our 11 choirs!); Church School; youth groups; Bible studies; mission programs; pastoral care visits; seniors activities and, of course, worship on Sundays and holidays—more than 150 services per year. In addition, our church is home to almost a dozen community organizations that collectively serve hundreds in Bronxville and beyond.
It takes approximately $7,000 per day to maintain what we’re doing. Imagine how much more we could do if all of us choose to increase our gift, or to give for the first time. (At present, approximately half our members give.)
Please prayerfully consider what you can give—not just to maintain our abundance, but to increase it. Maybe this is the year to step out further in faith. Thank you for all you’ve done, and for what you will do, to spread Christ’s love throughout our community and world. Even a small gift goes a long way.
