Children and Families

Infant & Toddlers:
Professionally staffed childcare is available for infants and toddlers, from 10:15 am through 11:45 am on Sundays and special days throughout the year.

Church School:
Church School meets most Sunday mornings at 10:30am from the Sunday after Labor Day until mid-June. The children in grades one through eight go to church and are dismissed to their classes after the Chancel Talk. Children who are in kindergarten or younger, go directly to their classrooms. The goal of the Church School is for children to experience God’s love through the incredible group of volunteers that are part of the Church School, while also learning about God. We offer a Christ-centered, Bible-based curriculum, that focuses on the overall story of Scripture from the Reformed tradition, and emphasizes the major themes of the Bible and salvation.

New children and visitors are welcome any time throughout the year!  Before worship service, come to the education wing of the building (which is the north side), and the first office on your left (once you enter the hall of all the staff offices) is Alexis Mastromarino, Church School Director.  She (or one of the two Church School Coordinators) can assist you in finding the age-appropriate classroom.  You can also contact her in advance, at 914-337-6776, ext. 118, or e-mail alexis@reformedchurch.org.

Church School Special Events
A Children’s Ministries committee plans events throughout the year and on special Sundays for the children. Some events are to bring the church community and the children together. Some are for families to celebrate a season. Some are to encourage the children to reach out to others. Events are always opened to all.

Chancel Talk:
This is a weekly “mini-sermon” during Sunday worship at the 10:30am service, in which children (3rd-8th grade) are invited to come up the Chancel and hear a special children’s message that ties into the worship and Scripture of that day.  They are then dismissed for Church School.

About Baptism and Communion Classes (ABC):
Two sessions are held on two Sunday mornings in January of each year to educate third graders and their parents about the Christian sacraments of baptism and communion, as practiced in the Reformed faith.

Confirmation Class:
The Confirmation experience is a crucial step for youth.  Through Confirmation Class, the students learn about the history, theology, and practice of Christianity, and discern more clearly what they believe.  They explore how they will express their faith within the church family, and make commitments to strengthen and grow in their relationship with the church and with God.  Our confirmands also take on the full privileges and responsibilities of church membership.  The Confirmation time is a chance to “come and see” what Christ has in store for us, to serve in mission, to participate and lead in worship, to be mentored, and to express a personal faith statement.

Summer Story Hour:
A special enrichment program for children, running from the close of Church School classes in mid-June through the beginning of Church School on the Sunday after Labor Day.

The Reformed Church Nursery School:
Weekday classes for children two-years-old through pre-kindergarten.  For more information, see the special link to RCNS.  On Thursdays, a short service of worship and learning is held for nursery school students in the sanctuary, led by a member of our church staff.

Intergenerational Events:
These include the Advent Supper, Fall Special Event, and Family Fun Night!  These vary somewhat from year to year (this year we had a Sock-Hop, too), but always involve bringing families together.

Girls’ Friday and Guys’ Friday:
A fun monthly program held for 5th and 6th grade boys and girls, separately.  This happens from 5:30-7:00pm, usually on the second Friday of the month, and is a chance for 10-12-year-olds to get involved in the church and get to know one another.  We welcome friends and visitors, as well as church families.  The program includes a variety of games, dinner, crafts, dance, and discussion.

The Children's Library

The Reformed Church Childrenšs Library was dedicated in 1986 in honor of Donald B. Whittemore, an Elder and member of the Consistory. In 2005, Karen Cross, former Church Educator and Marjorie Mir, childrenšs librarian, added new furnishings and refreshed the collection. Now, posters and framed prints as well as an assortment of book-character toys and puppets offer an invitation to parents and children from the Sunday School and Nursery School.

The collection, ranging in interest from nursery school through the sixth grade, contains books on religious themes, picture books and poetry for family sharing, fiction, science and biography for older readers.

The library is open for browsing and borrowing on weekdays from 9-5 and on Sundays from 9-12:30. Books may be signed out and borrowed for two weeks.
